"Canon Pixma Pro9000 Mark II" 2009-12-09
By TPW (Twin Cities)
The package arrived on time in excellent condition. Setup instructions were straight forward. Helpful "solutions " software included. Online help well done. Videos from Canon site helpful. Printer looks professional in my office. Takes up about 1.5 square feet more counter space than usual sized inkjets. Well constructed, heavy with assist wheels to move if necessary. Have used Matt, Semigloss, Pro platinum II papers, and heavyweight Fine Art Photo Rag, in all sizes from 4 X 6 to 19 X 13. Makes noise when approaching paper and then is quieter than the regular inkjets. I must admit, I was stunned and very, very satisfied with the print productions. I paint oils on canvas and scan the original painting in the computer with true 6400dpi resolution on an Epson V600 and then print it out. BEAUTIFUL is all I can say! With many printers in the range of $250 plus, there is no contest with the results. The photos are better than most shops can print. Make sure you are buying th 9000 Mark II and not the last model Pro 9000. Here is a review site that I highly regard for photography and printing - Imaging Resource

Good luck,

TPW

I bought this for my graphic design projects. Another student had recomended it to the class, after having a few differnt kinds of brands and said this was the best. Print quality is great, photo finish. I also like it because it takes all kinds of paper weight.

"an excellent printer, but still missing a few features" 2009-12-02
By Julia Lichty (Blairstown, NJ)
Having purchased the Pro9000 Mark II after a few years of owning the previous version, I can say with some assurance that this one is improved. Its print speed is slightly faster, and they've added some new cleaning features that I now don't know how I did without. That being said, it's basically the same printer (it even uses the same print head as the earlier model), and some of my main complaints about it were not addressed with the update.

The Pros: This is truly a professional grade printer which I have used heavily for several months. I produce prints of my artwork sometimes at the rate of three or four hundred 8x10's a week, and at other times it sits idle for a week or two at a time. The color quality with genuine canon inks is incredible - in my experience requiring little to no calibration with a properly set up, quality monitor. While printing, it's quick and quiet, even without its special Quiet Mode enabled, and I have actually turned down its printing speed at times, to allow for more drying time between prints. If you need to print very high quality, medium-large format pictures (whether photos or art) at reasonably high volume, this printer is definitely a good choice.

The Cons: This may not be a good printer for someone who intends to use it only a few times a year, as it does use large amounts of ink in its cleaning cycles, and if you leave it sitting too long it will require several. What seems to be lacking more than the printer itself is the software it comes with - most irritating is its lack of support for 11x14" paper, a standard print and photo size readily available on one of my previous printers, an Epson Stylus Photo 1280. Its batch printing program, Easy-PhotoPrint, also limits paper type selection based on paper size - perhaps useful if printing only with Canon's paper, but in my experience it handles other brands just as well. Points that others have brought up about its size are more or less accurate - it is a behemoth. Instead of sitting next to my computer, it has the top of a shelving unit all to itself, and will overwhelm most desktop space. It also requires space behind and in front for those big 13x19" prints you'll be producing.

All in all, the good points of this printer far outweigh the bad, but for a very select number of people. If you're printing only letter sized, there are other printers in Canon's line that do the job just as well. If you print infrequently, a laser printer might be a better option, as it doesn't have heads that will clog. If you frequently need to print larger than 13x19" (it also has no banner printing feature), you'd be better with an actual large format printer. If you are an independent artist, artist group, or small photography studio, however, I would definitely recommend this printer.

"Canon Pixma Pro9000 Mk II" 2009-11-19
By Paul W. Weiler (Washington, DC)
I have only had the Pro9000 Mk II for a month and have only printed a few 8.5 X 11 photos on it. They were of high quality, great color, excellent resolution and very satisfactory. I have yet to print large (11 X 14 or 13 X 19) size pictures which is one of the reasons I bought this particular printer. The set up was very easy, the machine works just as advertised and is quiet. The only downside thus far-and it is not a significant issue-is that print speed is quite slow. This is true even for a black and white text document.

By George Heiser (Clymer, New York)
I have a Canon Pixma MP160 printer and sometimes the price of the Canon Ink Cartridge is a little expensive and so, I've tried the re-fill stations with minimal amount of success in getting all the ink into the tank and not on me. With Amazon's 15% discount subscription rate the price drops $3.37 for each tank I buy. So, now, I just pop it in the printer and beautiful, clear photos and documents pop out the bottom of the printer.

I am sticking with BLACK ONLY printing. It seems to work find and I am getting ample pages (at least 50 so far). I bought the black cartridge locally, I suggest you do the same.

 "Ink Hog" 2009-11-02

I do very little B/W printing and almost no color. I am shocked at how fast the ink gets used up. I'm sure this has to be the self cleaning it does because it certainly isn't from the one or so documents I print/week. This printer is a complete rip off when you need to keep buying ink just so it can clean itself. I've had other ink jets that are not like this.

"Lasts a REALLY long time!" 2009-09-22
By Joseph Freund (Burbank, IL USA)
I picked up a Canon MP620 as a new all-in-one for my printing needs at college. I prefer having paper in my hands to read assignments; it's easier to read than a computer screen and it gives me the ability to highlight important points. My Epson Stylus CX6000 wasn't getting the job done; the ink "ran out" too fast.

After printing about 350 pages or so in a month's worth of mostly black and white printing (yeah, it's a lot!), the Canon MP620 started to complain about running out of the PGI-220 ink. I rushed to buy this cartridge, fearing that I might run out of ink before it arrived. Well, it "ran out" soon after I got the cartridge. And... it's still printing just fine.

A great thing about the printer this ink cartridge runs on: you have the option to keep printing even after the cartridge's microchip estimates that the ink has run out. My old Epson printer did not give me that option, even though I knew ink was still left inside. 100 pages after "running out," the old cartridge is still running strong; I haven't even opened the replacement yet!

Long story short, you're definitely getting more out of your cartridge here than the microchip tells you. Just keep printing until it no longer prints! It's safe to say that you can get at least 500 pages out of this black cartridge, easy! The price you pay is nothing compared to the mileage you get out of this cartridge. Great value!

 "CANON MP620 ALL IN ONE PRINTER/SCANNER/COPIER" 2009-06-15
By Virginia A. Cahoj (Kansas, USA)
So far I love this printer. The pictures I print absolutely look ever bit as good as going to Walmart. I love the fact that I don't have to waste ink. Each color has it's own seperate cartridge. As I watch the ink levels decrease at a much different rate, I can see how much I wasted by having the all in one color cartridge on my old printer. On this printer you only replace one color at a time. This printer is very easy to use. I had no trouble learning how to use it. I like the fact that the paper is hidden underneath and the door opens automatically whenever you print. It also has a paper holder in the back of the printer that you lift up and position to hold photo paper so you don't have to remove the regular paper. I like that. I also like the fact that it has a card reader built in and I can print pictures right from the camera card. Don't need to go through the computer. I am so glad I read the reviews and checked it out in comsumer reports. This printer had the best rating.

It is tops for the money.

This ink looked fine as printed in my Canon MP610 Pixma, and buying the 3-pack saved us a few dollars, but either the cartridges and/or the printer are very inefficient -- we don't print much in color, and yet the cartridge runs out in what seems like a month or so. By B. Hovey (Chicago, IL United States)
The product is good 9 out of 10 times. But, always keep your receipt and box in case you need to return, because it is not uncommon to have an ink cartridge stop shortly after purchase, well before the ink is out. Anyway, my real complaint about this product is the pricing. I go through enough of these expensive ink cartrigdes to pay for a new printer several times over in a 1-2 year span. My current printer is the Canon MP830.

"Designed to cost you extra money" 2009-12-02
By J. Lum (NJ)
These ink cartridges run out really, really fast and will cost you an arm and a leg. This will happen even if you print sparingly or in B&W primarily. The thing is that these cartridges seem designed to go empty as soon as possible. I swear that the ink just evaporates from the cartridge without you printing a page in about 3 months. I've gone through several batches of these and rarely if ever print! The design of the chip and sensor are also designed to show empty as soon as possible. The cartridge has two halves, one with ink and the sensor, the other with an ink sponge and the part that actually feeds the printer. Well, the ink will be "gone" first in the half with the sensor, even if the other half is still completely full of ink! This is called planned obosolesence and a rather sneaky way to accelerate your next purchase. I bought some cheap imitation ones and they very smartly made the ink sponge half as small as possible and the half with the sensor as big as possible so you don't waste that last bit of ink. I highly recommend you avoid purchasing a printer that needs these cartridges or go the off-brand route and buy some really cheap ones!

"Excellent, but not for auto only users." 2009-12-06
By R. Moreno (Northern Califonia)
This camera can provide excellent results but you have to be willing to go beyond the "auto" only mode. This is not your typical point and shoot camera; it's a serious camera with awesome potential. What I love about it are the old school dials and manual controls, rugged, solid build and articulating screen which makes it so much easier to frame low shots.

I'm using a Lensmate lens adaptor which allows the use of add-on lenses and 72mm filters. With this adaptor the filter can be left on all the time with no vignetting or lens interference. This is important to know for those thinking of buying this camera for those reasons. The downside to adding this adaptor is flash interference at wide angle shots, partially blocks the focus assist beam and it renders the viewfinder completely useless.

 "Canon PowerShot G11" 2009-12-05
By A. M. Swartz
Our previous camera was a Canon G2, with use of a PowerShot A570IS this past summer for underwater photography. Our experience with the G11 has been limited so far, but from what we have seen up until now, this camera is a real top of the line piece of equipment. It offers everything from fully automatic to fully manual, a wide range of pre-programmed profiles, and the ability to create and save your own profiles.

I have only one minor comment. While the instruction manual covers the function of each of the buttons, a manual (in the form of a PDF-document on the cd) going into more detail about the various profiles and what you might expect to encounter under the different circumstances would be a big help.

"Not as good of build quality as G7, but great images quality." 2009-12-04
By Ardavan (Belgium)
I moved from a G7 to G11, mainly because of RAW format, wider angle and better low light performance. It does deliver on all those items plus a much better AWB and lots of new features. The overall image quality is excellent.

But the construction is flimsy. I loved the solid feel of G7 and this one feels a bit more plastic. The turn wheel in the back feels specially weak.

Another short coming of this camera is lack of HD video.

"Canon G11 vs. Canon S90: A Matter of Personal Preference" 2009-11-30
By Gregory Gilbert (Brooklyn, NY)
Canon G11 vs. Canon S90: A Matter of Personal Preference (I'm posting a very similar review under both the S90 and the G11.)

I've been trying to find a 'carry everywhere' camera to always keep on my person so that I don't miss the amazing things that make up the events of everyday life (like tomorrow when I actually get to get off the R train at Cortland Street in Manhattan, something I haven't been able to do for years due to construction). I wanted something that was (1) Small and (2) Had the ability for full manual controls for shutter speed and aperture. The two cameras that fit this bill very well were Canon's S90 and G11 - Canon's top of the line point and shoots in their respective series (S and G). But which one?

The two major things that the cameras have in common (in addition to the above mentioned manual controls) are:

1. The same image sensor (same size, etc)

2. The same image processor

Anyone who's written a comparison of the cameras will point this out quickly - because normally 'which camera' would come down to these one of these two issues. In addition to these things, there are dozens of other features that both cameras share: this makes it very difficult to decide "which camera?" Having owned both of them (but ultimately deciding to go with the G11 and returning the S90) I would like to make a short list of positive/negatives which I think could be deciding factors when trying to choose between these two excellent cameras. Instead of listing both positive and negative points by each camera, I'll simply point out the positives of each that the other model does not share - I hope that this is helpful in your decision!

G11: Advantages

- Hot shoe: but on a compact? Some people will say "it's pointless to use an external flash on a compact camera - the whole point is to be compact!" That's a valid critique, but at the same time there are times when it's nice to be able to throw a flash on a compact if you really need one. I own the 430EX and the 580EX II (both compatible) but I picked up the newish 270EX with the G11 and it works fantastically with the camera without adding a lot of weight. Both the camera and the flash fit perfectly into the Pelican 1060 case side by side but with enough room to stay padded with the foam insert. And hey - if I want to throw the nearly-twice-as-big-as-the-camera-itself 580EX II on the G11 I can do it! Yet I can also do without it - the camera is versatile this way in a way that the S90 is not.

- Vari-Angle LCD: which at first I found annoying. The screen adds just enough bulk to the camera that it does not fit in smaller cases which it otherwise would. When I first got the camera I was really rather annoyed by it in fact - not only because of the bulk but because it is actually smaller than the LCD on the S90. I had to read another review to realize that it was a much better thing than I realized - because it allows you to hold the camera at all sorts of different levels and angles while still allowing you to see what you're shooting. I really enjoy doing photography with the camera low to the ground (I have an angled viewfinder for my DSLR) and so this works perfectly for what I need. As others have pointed out, the Vari-Angledness of the LCD allows you to flip it while in storage so that it's even more protected.

- Remote Shutter Release: you can use one! I love doing night photography and that the G11 allows me to use a cable release really seals the deal on the S90 vs. G11 for me personally (granted on the S90 you can always use the 2 second self-timer). Good news too if you use a Canon Rebel DSLR - it's the same cable release.

S90: Advantages

- Very compact: quite a bit smaller than the G11, it would easily fit in pockets and cases that the G11 never could. If you're into Pelican cases like I am, you can fit the S90 in the Pelican Micro Case 1010 with room to spare.

- More efficient controls: the ring around the lens is amazing and an excellent idea. Especially when in manual mode, this makes setting aperture and shutter speed a snap (it's more awkward on the G11 - you have to use the small back dial and then toggle between aperture and shutter speed with a separate button which can get to be messy when you're trying to shoot quickly).

- The f2.0 lens: a full stop faster than the G11's 2.8 lens. This is a LOT of light, and especially important when you want to take photos in low-light situations (note though that the lens on the S90 doesn't zoom in far as the G11 if that's important to you - both lenses are the same focal length when zoomed out).

Both the G11 and the S90 are beautiful, well made cameras that will serve any photographer well when you're looking for something that's not DSLR sized.

 "Wonderful Camera" 2009-11-27
By Dan R. Clement (San Diego, CA)
The Canon G11 is a solid built camera which you will notice the first time you pick it up. This camera should be considered an intermediate step up between a point and shoot and a DSLR. The Canon G11 sports the full range of manual setting options and has a hot shoe which will accommodate the same series of Canon flashes that the larger DSLR's do.

Image quality is excellent as long as you do not go above ISO 400. This has always been the Achilles hill of the Canon G-Series and remains so.

Canon finally brought back the articulating LCD screen. It is bright, clear and a pleasure to use. No matter the angle you shoot from, the screen can be rotated to accommodate.

For me the G11 is an upgrade from the G7 and I could not be happier. I also own the Canon 5D Mark 2 and 1DS Mark 2 professional series of cameras. I use the G11 as a backup and general walk around camera when I do not want to lug around the larger, heavier pro-series.

I have been using the Canon G11 for about a month now and Highly Recommend this camera.
